Seed opening disks

from WearParts

Disk wobble on planter seed opening disks has been an industry-wide problem.

Over the years, Solid Rock Ag has continuously fought to properly shim disk openers because of wobbly blades. It used to be a common practice of ours to measure each disk with a dial indicator for run-out. Then we would return the disk openers that were out of spec. before selling them to our customers. We finally set up a jig and started measuring all of the disks that came through our shop. Our spec is .05” of error and we do not install them if they are worse than that. Over the years we built a data library of measurements from different disks across the industry and we would use this as a benchmark whenever trying out another brand of blade. For several years now, we have been carrying the WearParts line and have been extremely impressed with them. The bearing’s utilize a 205 Heavy Duty Bearing and are built much heavier than the standard hubs. They also utilize a Triple hardness treatment which keeps the edges sharp and makes them much less prone to chipping on rocks and wear. These Blades also go through factory tolerance checks and are much more consistently true than the industry standard.

In 2020, A local customer of Solid Rock did a side-by-side with a 1790 Planter. After 2800 acres, there was almost ⅜” less wear on the Wearparts blade than the John Deere. It was also very clear how much less of a bevel was left on the JD blade as you can see in the image.

WearParts also offers many assortments of blades and coulters for different equipment along with replacement Tillage Points. You can find more about their offerings on their website Here.

I have been extremely impressed with the Wearparts disk openers. We have seen 3 times the wear life on them compared to the companies we have been using. It used to be very common for us to have bearings going out in them, and I have not lost a single Wearparts bearing.
